The Hawker Hunter is a classic transonic British jet-powered fighter developed by Hawker Aircraft. Entering service in 1954, it became a staple of the Royal Air Force (RAF). I always considered it to be the most beautiful of all the jet fighters, with its sleek design and perfectly proportioned layout.
Over the years I have been involved with three: the first, E-421, that I recovered from Brooklands Technical College; then E-142 (XF314), that I recovered from Wycombe Air Park in 2005; and the third and most spectacular, in 2018, was Hunter XL623, removed from its pole in Woking Shopping Centre. Sadly, by then I had retired from aircraft recovery and had to watch Finch of Bookham do the job. However, as kindred spirits, they were happy to let me film it and offer the odd helpful suggestion. The Hunter was largely phased out of front-line service in the 1960s with the arrival of faster, supersonic aircraft. However, two-seat trainer variants remained with the RAF and Royal Navy into the early 1990s.
