The Hawker Harrier, together with its Kestrel precursor, transformed military aviation as the world's first successful operational VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) jet. Developed privately by Hawker at Kingston from 1957 and powered by the remarkable Bristol Siddeley Pegasus engine, it became one of the most iconic aircraft of its era. Its performance during the 1982 Falklands War only added to its legendary status.
The Harrier continued to evolve throughout its service life, eventually leading to the British Aerospace/McDonnell Douglas Harrier II. After more than four decades of service, the UK's remaining Harriers were retired at the end of 2010, bringing an extraordinary chapter in aviation history to a close. I have had the privilege of helping recover and reassemble several of the aircraft now on display at Brooklands Museum. This playlist brings together their stories in video form, celebrating the remarkable legacy of these aircraft and the work that helped preserve them.
